Music Matters

December 8th, 2011

"Art and music are basic human functions. We have the burning desire to create, whatever it may be and however tiny or grand. The interaction with sound is unavoidable, either to make it or take pleasure in it. People have always found music significant in their lives, whether for enjoyment in listening, the emotional response, performing, or creating.” - Gilbert Galindo - composer

Music can open up a whole new world of experience that has immense worth because it can enhance the mind, improve physical co-ordination and self-expression. The easiest way a person can become involved with music is through listening or attending a musical event. The more options we provide for people to enrich their lives and minds, the better it is for our society, that’s where the Festival comes in.

We live in the heart of an active arts and music culture with opportunities for all types of experiences. Sound of Music Festival is just one of many. But it’s important because it makes music accessible for everyone regardless of age or income level. The Festival and its history are woven into the fabric of our local identity. It’s important for us to keep it here, keep it free and keep it thriving.

What began as a community event to celebrate the Burlington Teen Tour Band has evolved into Canada’s Largest Free Music Festival. The Festival welcomes over 200,000 guests and showcases 90 musical acts over 10 performance areas. In addition to the music, there is the Grande Festival Parade, Family Zone, Carnival, Downtown Streetfest and “Taking it to the Streets”, a year round free music education initiative designed to inspire a love of music and the arts in our youth (also volunteer run and led by our community’s finest arts professionals).  The Festival itself remains almost entirely volunteer run with a year round staff of 2.5.  This year, we had over 700 volunteers, 150 of which help throughout the year in planning on the Board and various committees. It is funded by government grants, local fundraising efforts, and generous corporate sponsors. Year after year (this year will be 33rd event), the benchmark is set a little higher, we’re ready for the challenge and invite you to join us if you can by volunteering, donating or sponsoring.

Happy Holidays from Sound of Music Festival!
