May 1st, 2008

Burlington, Ontario (May 1, 2008) The success of Burlington's Sound of Music Festival is a reflection of the Canadian way - a commitment to volunteering and community involvement. That's how Burlington's premier event has grown to attract over 190,000 visitors over Fathers Day weekend!
Since 1997, Burlington's Sound of Music Festival has operated as a fully separate entity from the City of Burlington. Planned by a dedicated volunteer Board of Directors and more than 70 year-round committee volunteers, the Festival adds an additional 400+ volunteers to work on various tasks on Festival weekend. Volunteerism has become the backbone of the Festival and vital in maintaining and preserving the original initiatives of holding an annual family event with free admission!
Becoming a Festival volunteer provides the opportunity to meet new people, get involved in the community and, for high school students, earn your required volunteer hours. There are more than 10 committees including Communications, Fundraising, Green Team, Hospitality, Licensed Areas, Logistics, Parade, Programming, Sponsorship, Streetfest, Vendors, and even a Volunteer Committee - something for everyone! The Festival welcomes new volunteers to join committees or just pitch-in on the Festival weekend, which will run from Thursday, June 12 to Sunday, June 15, 2008. Please visit the Festival website, www.soundofmusic.ca, and click on the Volunteer button to find out more about all the volunteer opportunities that are available.
During this National Volunteer Week (from April 27 to May 3), the Festival would like to pay tribute to the thousands of volunteers who have donated their time and energy to make the event a success over the years. Thank you to each and every volunteer for helping to ensure that the Festival maintains its status as Burlington's premier event.
Thursday, June 12 - Sunday, June 15, 2008 will mark the Festival's 29th year of bringing "Four Fabulous Days of Music" to Spencer Smith Park, the city's beautiful waterfront park and downtown core. Through the generosity and support of sponsors and the dedication of over 400 volunteers, the event continues to be a FREE event for music lovers of all ages welcoming an estimated 190,000 visitors during 2007. For volunteer opportunities or Festival information visit www.soundofmusic.ca or call the Festival Hotline 905-333-6364.
